Columbia Freeze Bowling Ball Video

Here’s a YouTube video of the Columbia Freeze bowling ball.

I’m not sure if the drilling is standard, but the ball seems to have a very dramatic hook reaction.

Check out more videos by viewing the Videos tag on this blog or at my YouTube channel!

List of Bowling Alleys in Malaysia

This is a comprehensive list of all the bowling centres in Malaysia.

You can refer to the contact list to find your nearest bowling alley, or find the phone number to make lane bookings, or plan for a bowling session at your holiday destination.

My objective is to answer your questions “Where can I go bowling in Malaysia?” or “Where is the nearest bowling centre?” or “Can I go bowling at…”

I hope you find this list useful. I will be adding in additional information such as GPS co-ordinates and Google Maps links after I do additional research.

How to Get a Strike In Bowling

bowling strike by Wallula Junction

Nothing beats the feeling you get when you roll a strike. Nothing, of course, except getting a string of strikes and seeing those Xs on the score board.

How do we get more strikes? Well first of all we need to understand how our bowling ball is able to knock down all ten pins.

Hitting the Pocket

When the ball hits the pins between the first and third pins, we say that the ball hits the pocket.

Refer to this simple diagram I created:

bowling pins strike reaction

If the ball hits at the correct angle, the first pin (or head pin) will knock down pins 2, 4 and 7. The third pin will knock down pins 6 and 10.

The ball continues in the same path and hits the fifth and ninth pins. The fifth pin will knock down pin 8 and you have the perfect strike.

If you are left handed, the reverse happens.

Alternative Methods

There are other ways to get a strike.

Sometimes the ball will hit the first and second pins (go Brooklyn) and still be able to strike.

Sometimes the pins fly around so hard they bounce off the side walls and ‘collect’ a pin left standing.

But I Hit the Pocket!

Why do we miss out on a strike when we are sure the ball has hit the pocket?

There are a few reasons this can happen… first of all is the angle of entry. If the angle of entry is too shallow or too steep, you will miss hitting the key pins that are needed to cause the chain reaction.

If the ball does not have enough inertia (not enough speed or if too much hook is applied) the ball will be deflected off course by the pin.

Sometimes it could even be hitting the pins too hard. The key pins fly backwards over the pins at the back.

How to Hit the Pocket Consistently

You might be wondering why everyone tries to hook the ball. It turns out that hooking the ball produces an optimum angle of entry.

If you can’t hook the ball, one way to get a better angle is to aim your ball from the second arrow to the pocket, instead of trying to hit it straight on.

Hope you enjoyed this post and feel free to share extra tips in the comments!

Columbia Freeze Entry Level Bowling Ball

The Columbia Freeze bowling ball was released in June 2010, and it is an entry level bowling ball. This means it is the perfect choice for those of you who are looking for your first bowling ball.

The ball has a two piece core which is a modified version of Columbia 300′s Messenger core.

It has a polished high performance cover, which complements the core nicely to produce a light hook.

The Columbia Freeze comes in weights of 14-16 pounds, and is available in six colours.

How to Keep Score in Bowling

This post will show you how to keep score in bowling. After reading through this tutorial, you should be able to know how the bowling points system works.

Frames

Before we get started on the scoring, we need to remember that there are 10 frames in each game of bowling.

In each frame you get two throws, except for the tenth frame where you get an extra throw if you spare, or two extra throws if you strike.

Open Frame

sample score

An open frame is a frame where you still have one or more pins standing after both your throws. To calculate an open frame, you just add the number of pins you knocked down.

In the example shown above, the total points for the first frame is 5 + 0, and the total points for the second frame is 2 + 3, giving you a total of 10 points.

Spares

A spare means you knocked down all the pins on your second throw. When you get a spare, you get ten points plus the total pins you knock down in your next throw.

A spare is marked with a ‘/’ in the score sheet.

If you are bowling in the bowling alley, you will notice that your score will not be updated when you get a spare until you make your next throw.

In our example, we get a spare in the third frame and a 9 in the next throw. So we get 10 + 9 points for the third frame. Add this to the 10 points from the first 2 frames and you get a total of 29 points.

Easy right?

What happens if you get a strike on the next throw after your spare? Well it’s the same. You get 10 + 10, which adds 20 points to your score.

Strikes

A strike is when you knock down all ten pins in your first throw. For a strike, you get 10 points plus the total number of pins you knock down in your next two throws.

A spare is marked with an ‘X’ in the score sheet.

In the fifth frame of our example, we get a strike but in the sixth frame we have a 9 and a 0. So the score is 10 + 9 + 0, which is only 19.

Check out the seventh frame. We get a strike, and the next two throws are also strikes. So the score is 10 + 10 + 10, which is 30.

But in the tenth frame, we could only get a 6 on our first throw so the score for the eighth frame is 10 + 10 + 6.

Practice

If you want to practice keeping score, I suggest you track your own score on a piece of paper the next time you go bowling (or watch a game of bowling on TV).

You could even check with the bowling alley if they can provide scoring sheets for you.

Compare your answer with the score provided on the screen to see if you got it right.
